Devil's claw was introduced to Europe in the early 1900s, where the dried roots have been used to restore appetite, relieve heartburn, and reduce pain and inflammation. Today, devil's claw is used widely in Germany and France to fight inflammation or headache, and low back pain.

People may use the inner bark of the root and stem for medicine. Devil's claw has been known to be used for arthritis, cancer, wounds, fever, tuberculosis, stomach trouble, cough, colds, sore throat, diabetes, low blood sugar, and pneumonia. It has also been used for emptying the bowels and may/induce vomiting.
